How would you react?

    I contacted my acrylic box suppler this morning for a quote, I sent the usual details needed for a price.
    this was their reply with no quote

    "Is there another fabricator you are using?
    We give you a lot of quotes but rarely get any order from you."

    I've used them several times but not weekly

    I would just say that sometimes the customer decides not to go for it.

    My reply was

    "No there is not another fabricator.
    Are you going to quote this or do I need to find another fabricator?"

    I did get a quote

    This reminds me of different perspectives, e.g. the couple that went to a therapist about issues in the bedroom. When interviewed, the wife stated that all her husband thought about was sex, sex, sex. All the time. When the husband was interviewed, he stated the problem was his wife never wanted to make love. Depends on how you look at it.

    I think your supplier stated their question poorly. I think what they were trying to ask you was "are we being outbid?".

    At first it was odd to see that response. Upon second reading, I think they may be losing business and may be directly asking if that is the case. They could have been more eloquent. ...or they may be annoyed at the pricing-to-sales ratio they are getting.

    ...and I would be looking around for another supplier.
    With that kind of approach they will be putting themselves out of business.

    I'm curious as to whether it was an e-mail or phone query, and how far up the food chain your request landed. If there's anyone above the person with whom you dealt, it might be illuminative to contact them about it. Honest feedback is a gift. Good call on not writing the company name here.

    I used to deal a lot in aviation prints. Limited Edition, co-signed collectors stuff.

    I ordered some from my usual publisher one day and they responded by saying they were only supplying 'authorised' dealers
    in future. BUT I could become such by buying one copy of every print in there catalogue. This would have meant laying out over
    10KGBP. They did generously offer to give me 90 days credit. :p I told them to stuff it and that was a finish of my dealing in aircraft prints.

    The market was tailing off at the time so wasn't too sorry. I heard on the grapevine that the publisher had been taken over and they were
    in the process of 'weeding out' all the little guys. The market declined over the next few years and one day I had a phone call from them
    offering me a special deal on some new prints.
    "I'm not a Authorised Dealer", says I.
    The answer was some thing like, "Oh we aren't bothering with all that now..."

    The moral is: Be careful how you treat people on the way up the ladder, as you may meet them on the way down.

    I contacted him thru email, same way I've always done it for 2 years.
    I was shocked to learn this morning that on LinkedIn he is listed as the owner of the company. His Facebook page shows him as ceo. but you can say anything on facebook and linkedin

    I did write that email and I'm sorry if I came off the wrong way as @bruce papier has suggested.

    Firstly - I am one of the owners and the CEO of the company.

    I'd love if you would connect with me via Linkedin.

    I've given you 10 or 12 quotes over the past year and a half and I received a single order (not two), @cjmst3k seems to understand the pricing-to-sales ratio situation.

    The amount of orders received vs the number of quotes given was unusual and I wanted to make sure that our pricing wasn't being used to negotiate with a competitor.

    I am sorry if I came off the wrong way and I hope that this misunderstanding does not preclude mutual opportunities in the future.

    You have my email and my phone number (and my Linkedin) in case you would like to have a conversation and develop a better relationship.

    This has been a learning experience for me, so I do thank you for the opportunity to grow as a professional.

    Kudos to you, Wilson, for owning up to the comments and acknowledging that you can do better next time. This is how we learn.

    Maybe the best of this situation is that you have been "tested" and shown to be honorable.
